AI Guardrails

What are AI Guardrails?

AI guardrails are the rules and technical controls that keep an AI system's behavior within safe, legal and on-brand limits: what it may say, which data it may use and which actions it may take.

Guardrails work at several layers. Input checks catch attempts to manipulate the AI and remove sensitive data it should not see. Instructions and grounding keep answers within approved content. Output checks screen replies for things like personal data, prohibited advice or off-brand language before a customer sees them. Action limits define what an AI agent may do on its own, what needs a person’s approval and when it must hand over.

In regulated industries guardrails also include logging and review: recording what the AI was asked, what it answered, which sources it used and who approved what, so the organization can show auditors and customers how decisions were made.
