Human in the Loop
What is Human in the Loop?
Human in the loop (HITL) is an approach to AI in which a person reviews, approves or corrects the AI's output at defined points, rather than letting the system act entirely on its own.
In a contact center, human in the loop often looks like agent assist: the AI drafts a reply, summary or next step, and the agent checks and sends it. It also covers escalation, where the AI recognizes that a case is complex, sensitive or outside policy and hands it to a person with the full conversation and context, and quality review, where supervisors sample AI-handled interactions.
The right amount of human oversight depends on the risk of a wrong answer. Low-risk, high-volume tasks can be automated once they are proven; decisions about money, health, eligibility or vulnerable customers usually keep a person involved. Feedback from those reviews is also how the AI gets better over time.
